When I finally started to get the idea that smoking wasn't so harmless...

When I was 25, a close family friend died of lung cancer.  From diagnosis to death it took 14 months.  Chemotherapy, radiation, surgery and oxygen tanks were her life for the last 12 months she was alive.

She was 48 years old, the same age as her best friend who happens to be my mother.  It should be noted that my mother never smoked and is a healthy 71 year old today.  They shared just about every habit they had, drinking on weekends, hair twirling, sunbathing and eating crazy amounts of sweets - everything except for smoking.  My mother was devastated, the doctor that was there at the end told her that Mary was yet another victim of cigarette smoking.  My mother was shocked, smoking never seemed to be anything other than glamorous, sexy and fun - she had never thought of it as dangerous!

And this started her campaign to get her three children that did smoke to stop.  Campaign, LOL, more like a nag session that lasted twenty years for me!

Next: Momma and her gorilla tactics!
